2009
 The British International Amateur
Film Festival 2009 took place from Thursday 23rd to Sunday
26th April 2009 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, hosted by CEMRIAC region at
the Chesterfield Hotel.
The event proved very popular and the Chesterfield Hotel was soon sold-out,
but delegates were found places in other nearby hotels. People came from
all parts of the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands
and South Korea. |
| Thursday featured an afternoon
guided town walk on the theme of the railway engineer George Stephenson,
including his burial place in Holy Trinity Church, and the Civic Theatre
Museum. In the evening delegates enjoyed presentations by award-winning
Midlands film-makers Geof Caudwell and Clive Atkins. |
 Friday thanks
to sponsorship from Chesterfield Borough Council and NE Derbyshire, there
was a fascinating workshop led by Alan Atkinson on bluescreen/chromakey
techniques.
Among Alan's best known works are the fantasies Extinction
Event and Heatwave featuring midlands pig-farmer Arthur
Ruddles saving the world - both of which make extensive use of blue screen
techniques. |
In the afternoon delegates had a choice of excursions. One group went
to a 19th century Barrow Hill to see steam, diesel, electric and gas turbine
locomotives in the country's last operational Railway Roundhouse. Saved from
demolition by enthusiasts, Barrow Hill received Best Event Award in the 2008
Derbyshire Heritage Awards. The other group visited Revolution House, which
three centuries ago was the scene of a meeting between three local noblemen
that led to the overthrow of King James II.
In the evening winning A-V sequences from the IAC/Geoffrey Round Competition
were shown. |
Saturday four mini-cinemas
showed a large selection of movies from the IAC International Film and Video
Competition.
In the evening came a Gala Dinner, during which Ivor Rose and Sir
Paul Holden were presented with FACI fellowships . Then Phil Martin
was presented with an FACI(M) master-moviemaker fellowship and a UNICA Gold
Medal in recognition of his contributions to UK programmes at the UNICA
Festival.
The after dinner speaker was the voice-over artist Colin Day, who
presented a light-hearted "listen" to the work of him and his colleagues,
including hilarious out-takes from recordings by people like Orson Welles
and Tom Baker. |
Sunday - the Award Winners
Show featured the top films in the IAC International Competition interspersed
with the Competition Manager's choice of short films to make up an entertaining
and often thought-provoking presentation. Details of all the results of the
2009 competition can be found

Many delegates chose to stay over on Sunday evening to round out the weekend
discussing the event and movies with friends. |
| BIAFF 2010 will be on 16-18th April 2010
at Bedford hosted by North Thames Region.
