2001 Finals - Mike Coad reports:

The North v South Grand Final took place last Sunday 28th January simultaneously at Farnborough Village Hall in Kent and at Altrincham Video Society's club room. The Farnborough venue attracted 75 people which is considerably higher than last year, no doubt due in part to a dire warning in SERIAC NEWS that this might be the last Final held in the South if it wasn't well supported. I would like to thank all those clubs who made the effort to attend, especially those who did not have an entry in such as Epsom and South Downs. Whilst figures are still being totted up, your presence has guaranteed that we will run for at least another year (more of this later).

We were honoured that Kenneth Seeger, IAC Chairman and Eric Granshaw, IAC President and his wife Brenda were able to attend. Kenneth kindly presented the John Wright trophy to Pam Martin on behalf of Spring Park Cine and Video Society for their film 'Tell Him I Miss Him'. The judges this year were Cyril Page, Colin Pain, FACI and Arthur Gatcum, BEM, FACI.

The judges as usual were asked to put their top 5 films in order of merit and although nobody in the audience guessed the exact order, the top three films voted by the audience were all in the judges top 5 so for once the audience generally agreed with the judges. Here are the full results, bearing in mind that there is only one trophy and therefore only one overall winner.

Judges Results Audience Result
1st Tell Him I Miss Him Spring Park Cine & Video Society (South) A Forgotten Hero Stoke Cine & Video Society (North)
2nd Sucker Stoke Cine and Video Society (North) Heaven Sent Newcastle A.C.A. (North)
3rd Strange Undertakings Altrincham Video Society (North) Tell Him I Miss Him Spring Park Cine & Video Society (South)
4th Heaven Sent
5th A Forgotten Hero Stoke Cine & Video Society (North)

There were just a couple of votes between 2nd and 3rd places and the winner of the audience vote was Bryan Harrison.

The theme for this years competition is 'WATER' and I shall be sending out the entry forms in due course to all eligible clubs in the South. Both the North and Southern Heats will take place on the same day this year - Sunday 18th November. The Grand Final will be held on Sunday 20th January 2002.

Peter Richardson's press release from the North notes that four Northern movies made it to the final selection, two of them from Stoke.  It adds:

"The audience at Altrincham Video Society's cinema room received the competition result in stunned silence as Vic Williams, the northern co-ordinator, announced the judges' order of merit."
