John Wright Trophy stays in the South
Filmmakers from the south took the first four places in the Grand Final of
the North v South competition held recently, with the fifth place going to
Altrincham Video Society from the north.
Two judges, David Taylor and Clive Taylor, with a background of film production
with the BBC and ITV, placed Falmouth & District Camcorder Club first
with their entry of The Price to Pay.
As happens fairly frequently in film competitions the audience vote in the
north produced entirely different conclusions. Could there be some northern
bias here?
The rivalry to secure the John Wright Trophy in this annual competition will
continue despite many controversial results over the past few years, and
no doubt plans are already in preparation to produce films to the 2002 theme
of 'Relaxation'. Entry forms can be obtained from:

SOUTHERN VIEW
The Grand Final of the North v South Competition was held on Sunday 20th
January, as usual simultaneously, in Farnborough Village Hall in the South
and Altrincham Video Society's club room in the North.
Following a very successful Southern Heat last November at which 120 packed
the hall, we were expecting the usual average of around 70 to attend the
Final. Sadly this was not the case and as the show commenced barely 40 people
made up the audience. Two years ago we had a similar situation with around
50 people turning up for the Final and we just about broke even. Prior
to last years Final, clubs were informed that if they did not support the
event, then it was likely it would be the last Grand Final we would hold
but thankfully they heeded the warning and we decided to carry on. It is
now clear that we cannot continue with the Final in its present form and
I am putting together some new proposals for the hosts Orpington Video &
Film Makers committee to study to ensure its future.
My thanks to those clubs who did attend, especially Falmouth (who also attended
the Southern Heat) and Epsom who didn't even have a film in the Final. As
usual, SERIAC Council members were there in force as were Valley Films who
always support this event. An honourable mention must also go to Harold and
Maisie Trill who never fail to turn up, not only to this but to almost every
Regional and National IAC event also.
Nevertheless, the show was enjoyed by all those who attended and following
the screening of the 10 final films, we showed once again The Elephant Never
Forgets, a well loved London Transport film about the last week of the trams
in London.
Falmouth and District Camcorder Club were this year's winner of the John
Wright Trophy for their wonderful costume drama The Price to Pay. This was
a take of Cornish wrecking and if you get the opportunity to see it at a
future IAC event, I would urge you not to miss it. Our guest of honour, Kenneth
Seeger, IAC Chairman, was in attendance and presented the trophy to Vic Strike,
Director of the winning film.
