NORTH v SOUTH GRAND FINAL REPORT

Sunday 30th January saw over 80 people crowd in to the Village Hall in Farnborough, Kent for the Grand Final of the North v South Competition. This was the highest attendance we have had for a Final and a lovely surprise after the lower than usual attendance at the Southern Heat.

The afternoon commenced with a showing of 5 films from the North that didn’t quite make it through to the Grand Final but were nonetheless enthusiastically received by the audience. These were followed by the first 5 finalists and then it was time for tea. Peggy Parmenter and her team provided their usual high quality refreshments whilst the audience had time to mingle and catch up on what each other were doing at their respective clubs.

After the break, the BIAFF promo film was followed by the remaining 5 finalists and then it was time for the audience to fill in their slips for both the ‘Audience Vote’ and ‘Guess the Theme’ Competitions.

The results of the Audience Vote were as follows:-

1st Place Flat Out Spring Park Cine & Video Society
2nd Place Vermin Stoke Cine & Video Society
3rd Place Control Duel Cardiff Cine & Video Society
4th Place End Game Phase 4 Films
Joint 5th Interception
Intention
Teign Cine & Video Club
Newcastle ACA

Only one person before, namely John Wright, has matched the judges decision. Whilst nobody matched the judges exact order this time, seven entrants did manage to match all five films in a different order so it looks like the audience were, for this year at least, on the same planet as the judges.

The official result was as follows:-

1st Place Flat Out Spring Park Cine & Video Society
2nd Place Vermin Stoke Cine & Video Society
3rd Place End Game Phase 4 Films
4th Place Time Out Epsom Cine & Video Society
5th Place Control Duel Cardiff Cine & Video Society

Following the raffle, we had a showing of ‘The Phantom of Milford St Giles’. Made by Norman Lilley of the Circle Eight Film Group, this is the long awaited sequel to his popular film ‘Above and Beyond’. Norman had kindly given permission for this to be shown following its successful public debut at the Surrey Film Festival the weekend before. The audience loved it!

John Gibbs, IAC Chairman, who had kindly travelled down from Leicestershire to attend, then presented the trophy to Mike Shaw of Spring Park Cine and Video Society as well as the ‘Audience Vote’ prize to Pip Hayes of Shooters Hill. Obviously, ‘winning’ is a totally new concept for Shooters Hill members and it was all we could do to prevent Pip from running a victory lap around the hall.

Despite giving lots of clues, such as how many words it was made up of, nobody worked out the theme for this year’s competition which is:-

TELL ME ABOUT IT

I would like to end this report by thanking the judges, Sutton Film Makers, the entrants and especially the audience for their attendance on the day. Your support is much appreciated and we look forward to seeing you all again for the Southern Heat of this year’s competition in November.
