Pendle Movie Makers (Colne)

Clubs Online | Contacts

This group meets on the first Monday of every month at The Blind Centre, Derby Street, Colne, at 7.30 pm. Our set-up is less formal than some clubs with the emphasis on joining in rather than being led. In this way we hope to respond to members' needs as they change. The emphasis is on sharing information and experience. Showing off equipment has a low priority.
Pendle Movie Makers party at the end of 2009. At their 2009 AGM and party Pendle Movie Makers' Chairman, John Morgan, congratulated members on their achievments in the past year, three club projects having been completed and delivered to the organisations involved.

The film group, whose motto is 'Filming in the Community for the Community', is gearing up for a celebration of fifty years since it was founded as Pendle Film Society. Members intend that a public show at the ACE centre in October will consist of examples of productions made over the half-century, some serious drama, some fun, some documentary.

Still from the filmed dedication of Burnley War Memorial. The record made, with ten camcorders involved, of the dedication of the new Nelson War Memorial on October 17th. was, John  Morgan felt, a tremendous effort.

So far the Nelson Branch of the Royal British Legion have taken 22 copies and are taking orders from their members and the general public to whom they will be sold in aid of the Poppy Fund.

Club, and even individual, productions tend to be outwardly directed for the benefit of churches, schools, charities and the Borough of Pendle itself. This has been a feature of the club since its foundation in the 1960's, the first major production being a record of the year in the public life of Nelson in 1962. Re-issuing this on video has been such a success that we have pledged a modern update so that we can leave something of value to our successors.

The road safety film for Colne Police, shot in 2008, was finally completed in 2009 and copies made to be distributed to schools. The picture shows Pendle Movie Makers in action on a road-safety film.

A still from 'The Singing Ringing Tree'. The Pennine Panopticons, which explains and illustrates the Panopticon Project, was made with the cooperation of Mid Pennine Arts. The illustrations show 'The Atom' and 'The Singing, Ringing Tree', two of the constructions.

Mid Pennine Arts took 20 copies and this will be shown locally.

Like all the Movie Makers productions, a copy will be sent to North West Film Archive for preservation.

Club equipment consists of SVHS VCR, DVD Player, TV and a projector with a good sound system. We now have two dedicated computers for video editing using Adobe Premiere 6 and 6.5 so that those members who have not been able to go in for NLE on their own can gain experience. Film-video transfer has been quite a feature recently, aided by a member's Sony Pro DVCAM's "Clear Scan" function which allows copying of film at its original frame-rate without "strobing" being a problem.

Meeting only monthly does not allow much inter-club activity but we usually have two or three exchanges a year, particularly with Yorkshire clubs, and a few members enjoy regional and national competitions. We welcome new members regardless of age or experience.
