GOLD & SILVER SELECTION : IAC 1993

A handful of runners-up from the 1993 IAC International Film and Video Competition; four from the Amateur class and one from the Open class.

1. THERE'S A PLACE
Leandro Blanco (Spain)
A beautifully photographed and stylish montage; a passionate and evocative plea to stop trapping animals behind bars in zoos. The music was written and performed by the maker himself: 'There's a place where time has stood still, where dreams never come true, . . . where freedom was lost long ago'.
BAVA Trophy, Best Music Video, Best Photography Award 1993; IAC Gold Seal 1993

2. THE REX : A NEW LEASE OF LIFE
John Anderson, Paul Jordan and Trevor Spencer (Yorks)
The story behind the re-opening as a cinema once more on October 7, 1988, of the Rex in Elland, West Yorkshire. Originally opened in December 1912 as the Central Picture House and re-equipped for sound in 1930, it finally closed in the early 60s as a cinema and became (off and on) a Bingo hall. It stood derelict for several years until purchased by two enthusiasts, Charles Morris and Peter Berry, the latter being a former manager of the cinema.

3. MASQUE
Terry Mendoza (Essex)
Regardless of the weather, each year in the two weeks before Lent, Venice celebrates its scandalous 18th-Century debauchery with Carnivale! A slick music montage of fascinating faces, filmed in 1991.

4. THE STORM
Sam Cutajar (Malta)
A colourful sunrise and a calm, restless sea. The small creatures and plants reach up to the warmth of the new day's sun. An explosion of colour leads to a sequence in which the birds become more and more feverish as the wind swells. Black clouds roll across the sun and the heavens open. The seas rage, the rivers race and the lightning forks across the skies. Set in both slow-motion and real time, this movie contains many moments of superb cinema.

5. CHANGE OF A DRESS
Michael M. Parks (USA)
A delightful plasticine animation film in which the characters continually metamorphose into other forms.
Transfer from 16mm film.
