NORTH V SOUTH FINALISTS 1999

This competition was founded by the late John Wright, FACI, and the final is between five entries from the north of Britain and five from the south. The Set Theme in 1999 was 'Bad Connection'.

SOUTH
1. GONE TO EARTH
Circle 8 Film Group, Surrey
A group of mates is working on a redecorating job, when one of them is accidentally electrocuted. Unfortunately, he has hidden a betting slip for a horse-race accumulator they have all paid into Written by Veronica Keywood and directed by her and John Myall.

6. A DROP OF WATER

A documentary about aspects of canals and how they flourished largely in the 18th Century, with particular reference to the connection between the Trent and Mersey Canal and the River Weaver in Cheshire, together with more recent developments.

A young man and his girlfriend look for a birthday present for his grandmother's friend who lives next door to her and who once had an interest in still photography. The girlfriend eventually finds an old camera ... Written and directed by Ann Sutherland.

8. ONE NIGHT STAND
Southport Cine and Video Society, Lancs.
After a prologue in which we see a schoolgirl being attacked by her classmates, we come to the present time, where we are introduced to a rather ineffectual young man who is trying to find a girlfriend, but without much success. He answers an ad in the local paper - and receives a 'phone reply, during which he is overheard, thanks to a crossed line, by a young husband who has had a row with his wife. The eavesdropper decides to take the other man's place on his date ... Directed by Jason Smaridge and Mike Waring.
