YEAR OF THE DOT
by Torrells Comprehensive School, Grays, Essex
Master-minded by Joseph Fiol, the school's Head of Creative Studies,
this involved over 500 pupils, teaching staff, parents, educationalists,
police and the local newspaper, Thurrock Gazette.
In July 1982, a paste-up of a typical Gazette front page, showing the first-year intake and teachers, was produced by the paper and dated 1984. Continual magnifications were made from a 9ft. x 6ft. blow-up of the page, the 'dots' being filled in at first by felt-tip pens and then, as they got larger, by black paint. The climax was reached in July 1984 when the 260ft. x 185ft. page was pegged out on the school playing field and photographed from a helicopter chartered by the local paper. In reality, of course, the project is the film - a project within a project - but this allows a drama of complex emotions to be played out from within a documentary context; staff, including the teacher responsible, pupils, parents and, indeed, the whole community.
