SoCo Regional Film and Video Competition 2008 Results

  • Slad Valley Wildlife Way by Bryan Adcock (Overall Winner and Best Editing and Best Use of Sound)
  • Our Environment is Important by St. Michaels School (Runner Up and Winner Youth Section)
  • Santorini - Island on the Edge by Bryan Adcock (Best Travelogue)
  • The Race by William Baldwin (Best Novice and Best Drama)
  • The Hidden Dean by Frank Lander (Commended)
  • Jug Band Blues by Clive Ody (Commended) The Cities That Touch the Sky by Ernie McKenna (Winner Semi-Pro Section ) One Week in August by John Bartlett (Runner Up Semi-Pro Section) This year the competition was sent to Scotland for judging by Dr Norman Speirs FACI, Jim Closs and Brian Saberton FACI.
    The Award Show was presented by Cheltenham Video Makers on March 15th at The Reddings Community Centre, Cheltenham.

    Frome Five Minute Festival Winners

    • The Way Forward by Triangle Productions (Overall Winner)
    • Aubrey's Seat by Graham Large (Second place)
    • Predators by Daphne Barbieri (Third place)

    Once again we were complimented on the refreshments. (I'm beginning to wonder if that's why some of them come.) This year we had 43 entries and all were shown and as far as I could tell no one dropped off.

    Vision On Challenge
    Closing date for entries 18th February 2008. Event 1st March 2008.

    A chance for amateur film makers in the South West to compete for the Vision On Challenge Shield. The competition is for video clubs and club members based South and West of a line running between Bristol and Southampton, including these two cities and of course our friends in the Channel Islands. The subject of entries is 'open'.
    The event will be at Sampford Peverell Village Hall. The first film starts at 7pm. Further details if you want to attend and entry forms if you want to compete are available from George Smeeth at Old Haldon, Cheriton Bishop, Exeter EX6 6HF Phone 01647-24321 gsmeeth@btinternet.com.


    2007 News

    THE ELEVENTH SoCo WEEKENDER 2007 took place from Friday 26th October - Sunday 28th October 2007 at the Kensington Hotel, 18 Durley Chine Road, West Cliff, Bournemouth, Dorset.

    The various competitions held during it were all decided by audience vote:

    • Top of the Clubs - This is a competition in which SoCo clubs are invited to enter their Film of the Year or Cup Winners Cup winner. It must not be a club film.
      Thailand - Land of Smiles by Ernie McKenna of Frome Film & Video Makers.

    • The Dolphin - this is SoCo's version of the Mermaid
      Black by Philip Marshman

    • The Baby-Dolphin - this is SoCo's version of the Mini-Mermaid. Entries mustn't run for more than 60 seconds complete.
      A Chance Meeting by Jim Gill

    • The Mo Pain Plate - this is presented to the most popular film(s) in the Lucky Dip. This year there was a three way tie and the holder of the plate was determined by first out of the hat.

      • How to Make a Cartoon the Hard Way by Philip Marshman (First out of the hat).

      • Cockington - One Moment in Time by Jim Gill

      • Pop Otters by Valrie Ellis


    SoCo Regional Film & Video Competition 2007 Results

    This year we introduced a new category for Members who earn a living from making videos:

    • England's Eden by John Bartlett (Runner Up Semi-Pro)
    • Ruf der Steine - Call of the Stones by Ernie McKenna (Best Semi-Pro Entry)

    The non-professionals:

    • In the Corner of a Foreign Field by Frank Bond (Commended)
    • Cold Shoulder by Cheltenham Videomakers (Commended)
    • Woodland Nursery by Frank Lander (Highly Commended)
    • As Time Goes By by Clive Ody (Highly Commended)
    • Belerion by Vision On Camcorder Club (Best Travelogue)
    • The Picture by Devizes Video Club (Best Drama)
    • Clarkson by Bristol Film & Video Society (Best Club Entry - Runner Up)

      and
    • The EPK of Pigeon Post by Frank Bond (Best Use of Sound - Best Editing - Overall Winner)

    The show this year was presented by Devizes Video Club. The SoCo Roadshow 2007 programme will be available shortly from the IAC Film Library on a 2 DVD set running 2 hours 30 minutes approx. * Colour * HiFi Stereo.     The competition took place on 29th March 2007

    Devizes Video Club won with The Barn, and the
    Drama award went to The Picture another
    Devizes Video Club production.

    THE FROME FIVE MINUTE FESTIVAL 2007
    for the AKM Music Cup

    The festival took place on March 24th 2007.
    Top award went to City of the Downs by Ron Prosser.

    THE 32nd TEIGN CUP COMPETITION
    was held on 13th October at Bitton House, Teignmouth, Devon. This year's winner was:

    • The Picture by Devizes Video Club

    • The runner-up (Teign Shield) was
      The Cities that Touch the Sky by Ernie McKenna of Frome Film & Video Makers.
