The 7th Peter Kittel Short Film Competition
Hosted by HCVS

A film festival for young people...

The Peter Kittel Competition Final took place at Harrow Arts Centre on Monday, 27th February.

Nine of the entries were screened. The event was attended by a good number of members including Marianne Kittel, who presented the awards. Christine Collins FACI (a member of Potters Bar CVS and Chair of the IAC NTR) was there to represent the IAC.

Entrants who came to the screening were Alex Elkins from Coventry, William and James Tupper and three of the four members of Golden Dog Productions, Mikey and Kim Roden and Anna Lindsdel.

Judges’ comments were given after each film.

Alan Morgan announced the results which were as follows:

Senior section 16 to under 19:

First prize £75 and one year’s membership of the IAC (donated by SOCO Region)
Off the Beaten Track by Leo Bridle aged 18 of Portswood, Southampton.

Second prize £50
Static by Jason Bradbury aged 18 of Cowes, Isle of Wight.

Third prize £25.00
Up to no good by Golden Dog Productions, a family group aged 12, 15,17 and 18 from Linslade, Beds.,
already IAC members and shield winners last year.

Static won the Peter Kittel Shield for the most original entry overall.

Junior section under 16:

There was only one Junior entry this year so no Junior first prize could be given but the Judges gave The Doll by William Freeman and James Tupper of Guildford Highly Commended, £20.00 and one year’s membership of the IAC donated by SERIAC. Both boys are aged 14 and pupils of Harrow School.

Off the Beaten Track (2. 06mins) can be seen on Leo Bridle’s website http://www.leobridlefilms.co.uk/offtrack.html - It is a delightful film about a cyclist who takes a wrong turn in the woods, resulting in a fantasy sequence.

Static features a people who have to wear identical plain white masks as part of their culture and are disturbed when challenged to remove them.

Up to no good is a flickering black and white film in the old style complete with piano music and scratches. Two girls in school uniforms march through the woods. Ambushed by a group of four boys who chase them and eventually tie one to a tree. The girls triumph in the end.

The Doll features a patterned oriental puppet with an inscrutable expression who terrifies a family before departing on a skateboard.

The three judges, Jean Biskeborn of HCVS, Alan Colegrave (former TV cameraman) and Paul Kittel (director and cameraman for TV) were impressed with the high standard of the entries and the originality shown by the filmmakers.
