UNICA 2003 - Poland
British Entries

UNICA Festivals: 1999 | 2000 | 2001 | 2002 | 2004 | 2005 | 2006 | 2007 | 2008 |

The British entry for UNICA 2003 consists of the following six films:

Frame grab A Pint in Front of the Telly by Reg Lancaster
Watching England is never that simple. Indeed, after the recent Slovakia match Gary Lineker reckons it should carry a Government Health Warning....

Frame grab Joseph's Faith by David Peffer & Frank Hodge
A young, un-circumcized Jewish boy with Aryan looks was sent from Germany to Poland to warn the Warsaw Ghetto Jews of their fate...

Frame grab Blowing in the Wind by Humphrey Park Group
The film shows a butterfly collecting nectar and pollen from genetically modified rape and then feeding from dandelions. ...

Frame grab Wall of Tears by Brian Dunckley
After the last conflict in Croatia, someone wrote the name of a missing relative on a brick and placed it on a main thoroughfare in the capital city of Zagreb. The idea caught on and very quickly a wall took shape...

Frame grab Dropping Off by Ken Wilson
Originally it was going to be a serious film looking at one man's life... (but) it became clear at this stage that it was evolving into a black comedy...

Frame grab Living in a Box by Eleanor Agius A short animation film about a little hand drawn figure locked into the page/box...

JOSEPH'S FAITH by David Peffer & Frank Hodges won a Silver and DROPPING OFF by Ken Wilson won a Bronze.

World Minute Movie Cup

The six films listed above are part of the National Programme. At UNICA there is also the World Minute Movie Cup. It is a great fun event for one-minute long (maximum) movies. Films are paired off and shown, and the audience votes by standing up! Causes a deal of laughter and cheering.

The winning film goes through to the next rouind against another till there are only two left. By the final vote the audience has been bouncing up and down a few times and it is a great relief after some days of watching the more serious National programmes.

United Kingdon has two films in this year - there is a right to a second if last year's film gets to a certain stage in the voting! This year we are represented by

  • WINGS by Barry Lockwood - An animatiomn about a guy who has wings tattooed on his heels.
  • WATCH THE BIRDIE by Geof Caudwell - Shotsa of a blackbird cut expertly to the music.
