It seems we were a generous jury compared with many previous ones. We honestly thought there were a great many good movies, though - as usual - only a handful stood head-and-shoulders above the rest.

The coveted award for "most interesting national programme" came down to a choice between UK and Germany. To the susprise of some, we Brits applauded enthusiastically when the decision went to:

Screen shot of the German programme introduction.

At the end of the festival the jury members were presented with cases of Belgian beer. Then followed a banquet and celebration with live music.  In his 80's Britain's Percy Childs rocked with Belgium's Martine de Boll. That summed up UNICA for me - a place of surprises, where people from various nations get together to have fun.

The jury at the end of the festival. Percy Childs and Martine de Boll rock.
  • In 2006 the UNICA festival goes to Daegu & Kyeongju in South Korea.

  • In 2007 it goes to Liptovský Mikuláš in Slovakia.

  • In 2008 it goes to Hammamet (Tunisia)

If Korea is too far and you can't wait for 2007, an excellent alternative is the Festival of Nations, held 18th to 24th of June 2006 in Ebensee, Austria. It is smaller than UNICA but its core support comes from UNICA regulars, the films are entered by film makers not countries and are possibly even better than those at the senior event. The main language is German but the majority of delegates speak English and most movies are subtitled or even performed in English.

Both UNICA and the Festival of Nations have websites in English:
