and Video Competition, premiered at movie 99, held April 22-25, 1999, in
Harrogate, Yorkshire.

'GIL'A, PHRALE, PHENIJE! (SING, BROTHERS, SISTERS!)
Jan Mens (Netherlands)
Scenes of gypsy life in a part of the Balkans. It is interesting to see as
many smiling faces as there are, despite what would be grinding poverty to
most of us. Music and singing is important to these people and is represented
by a 'staged' sequence at the end which, nevertheless, illustrates the strong
sense of community existing among them. This movie is graced by outstanding
photography by the Director. Widescreen format.

PERFECT
Christopher Mander (Surrey)
Petal (Tina Martin), a rather large young woman married to Stan (Sam Green),
who is much older and scruffy, wishes to be slim and beautiful and fantasises
about how things might be ... Realistic dialogue, enhanced by excellent
performances (especially by the leading lady) generate a rather touching
mood with nothing 'over the top', which could have happened had it not been
for the firm hand of the writer/ director.

ZOWIE KEATING, FREELANCE BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATOR
Tom France (Cornwall)
The work of the lady of the title, who specialises in flowers and fungi in
water-colours and pen-and-ink, is described and examined here. Her international
reputation is based on her highly detailed and technically-accurate studies,
which has led to them being used to illustrate reference books, journals,
etc. There is a good variety and choice of shots, all well edited, with a
clear commentary to hold things together.

A tramp (Ulrich Bain) and a wealthy woman (Gabi Weigert) react somewhat
differently to a charity appeal. Good camerawork, editing and sound all make
their contribution.

A DAY IN KENYA'S BUSH
Kay Bamford-Burnell (Worcester)
A riveting wildlife movie, with some magnificent photography. The maker says:
'At times the animals were so close, we almost felt we could put out our
hands and touch them'. It certainly compares favourably with what we see
on our tv screens. Good editing and a nicely 'personal' style of commentary
complement the visuals.

after serving a prison sentence for drug-smuggling, only then learns the
truth about what really happened. Written, produced and edited by the Director.

J., M. and D. Rogers (Yorks)
A charming movie for young children (one of a series of 'Forklift' stories),
with animated figures, cars, trucks, etc, and a country setting. Bobby Brown
wants to 'know if anyone can help his brother, Dave/ Who's been frightened
by a monster and is hiding in a cave'. A nice, clear voice-over tells the
story in well-written rhyming couplets.

Werner Wehnert (Germany)
A handsome young man (Oliver Clemens) is travelling on the underground when
an attractive young woman (Nina Wehnert) gets in and sits opposite. He is
asleep, holding an issue of Graffiti Art - a different issue of which she
is carrying too! She starts to fantasise - progressively! A delightful movie
which is imaginative, beautifully shot, edited and acted - and with a most
agreeable 'feel good' ending.

A young photographic model (Beatriz Sevilla) wakes up one morning and begins
her usual routine - but things are certainly not routine this morning ...
With first-class camerawork, editing and sound, this is a sheer movie experience,
in the sense that it couldn't exist in any other medium.
