This is an extremely ambitious historical, dramatised documentary about
the 15th- Century explorer, John Cabot (Geoff Salter), who wants to lead
an exploration to sail west to Cathay and 'Japango'. Born in Genoa, he eventually
approaches the Doge of Venice for funding - without success; he then tries
King Henry VII of England, who suggests he contact the authorities in Bristol,
which was then expanding and growing wealthy from its foreign trade ... All
this is convincingly portrayed with excellent costumes, props, settings and
performances. (There is also an informative booklet giving background details
of the characters and history of the period.) Directed by Graham Egarr and
Mike George.
