THE DREAM OF GEORGE
St. Cuthbert Films (Newcastle-on-Tyne)
This is the most ambitious and sophisticated movie yet from these makers.
It is based on part of Cardinal Newman's The Dream of Gerontius, and uses
the oratorio setting, and other music by Edward Elgar. Young Harry (Peter
Clarke) is a devout 'believer', George (Adam Bell) is definitely not! After
George discovers Harry practising part of Gerontius in church, they go to
the nearby woods, where George eventually stumbles and falls, hitting his
head. Screenplay by David Peffer; photographed and edited by Frank Hodges.

RATCLIFFE COLLEGE: THE FAMILY ALBUM
Ratcliffe College (Leics)
This movie is a record of all the activities undertaken at this well-known
college - scholastic, sports, arts and extra-curricula. There is one short
section in which the Headmaster, Mr Tim Kilbridge, gives a voice-over about
the College, but everything else is cut to a 'beat' sound-track - and it's
a tour de force of editing.

TRAVELLING MAN
Apache Films (North London)
'The Travelling Man' (Gerard Giorgi-Coll) comes into town 'some place, some
time, somewhere'. This is a 'send-up' American 'Western' in a modern setting,
complete with dead-pan voice-over at the start and a shoot-out to finish.
Lots of fun! Wide-screen format.

COMO ESCRIBIR CARTAS DE AMOR (HOW TO WRITE LOVE LETTERS)
Jan Baca (Spain)
A spinster school-teacher (Marissa Josa), of a 'certain age' in a Catalan
town in 1940, discovers some letters, a male photograph and make-up in a
pupil's desk, which leads to the girl (Marta Corral) being punished. In revenge,
when the girl thinks she sees the teacher looking at a man in church, she
and two of her chums, write letters purporting to be from the man. The letters
gradually get more passionate ... This is a masterpiece - a movie of great
feeling and humanity. It is deeply moving with a superlative performance
from the leading actress.
IAC Daily Mail Trophy, Best Story Award, Best Overseas Award, Best Acting
Award (Marissa Josa), Special Award: Acting by a Young Person (Marta Corral),
Special Award: Cinematography 1998
