BAILEY'S BATH
The Huddersfield Video and Cine Club This is a documentary about the Holmfirth
Lido, which existed from 1930 to 1949 thanks to a local mill-owner Joseph
Bailey. (For those who don't know, Holmfirth is the real-life setting for
TV's Last of the Summer Wine.) A massive amount of documentary and
film research has gone into this movie, as is usual for the Huddersfield
club. Produced by Trevor Spencer and David Whitworth.

BETTY & SAM
Peter Dunphy and Daniel Glynn (Northern Ireland)
The elderly couple of the title (Barbara Elbourne, David Pearson) live an
extremely hard life, and move their few belongings around in an old pram.
When the small village funeral director does not carry out their dying wishes,
their ghosts do not lie easy ... Widescreen format.

ROSE
Ron Prosser (West Sussex)
Sophie (Juliet McCrimmon) visits her grandmother, Rose (Pat Smith), now living
in an old people's home in the country, but apparently unable to communicate.
Sophie is soon to be married, so hopes that her grandmother might be able
to be there. Sophie's mother has given her a memento from Rose's past ...
This is a nicely written, gentle, somewhat moving, story, with good performances
by 'Sophie' and 'Rose'.

THE OLYMPIC MUSEUM
Richard Lewendon (Glos)
This is a fascinating documentary about the modern Olympic movement since
1896 and its creator, Pierre de Coubertin, and the Museum which has been
built in Lausanne to house its archives. There is also footage of as much
material as has been traced, both on film and on video, all of which is available
to students, researchers, etc. This movie is the result of what must have
been a phenomenal amount of research, both documentary and filmic, by the
maker. The excellent commentary is by Alan Simpson.

PIANISSIMO
Mino Crocé and Guido Wilhelm (Italy)
This wonderful documentary (whose title is the musical term for 'very quietly')
takes place in a home - originally founded and funded by the composer Verdi
- for retired musicians. They still, apparently, practise and, on occasion,
give performances to their colleagues - even going through unexpected traumas
in the process! A fabulous collection of 'characters' - and several of them
are in their nineties! 'Very quiet' they are NOT!!
