Jaak Järvine has been leading the Estonian amateur film movement since 1973. He was born on 16th April 1941 in Estonia. He completed his studies at Rakvere First Secondary school in 1959, Tallinn Music School (violin) in 1963 and Leningrad University (history of philosophy) in 1977. When the Estonian Federation of Amateur Film Makers was founded in 1991, he became its chairman. He was one of the organisers of UNICA '86. In the same year he and Karin Birkan published the book: 'Estonian Amateur Film' which presented the history of the Estonian amateur film movement from its beginnings to that point. In 1996 he published the second volume of the book and in 2000 - the third volume. Jaak has collaborated on several successful documentary films. "Let´s Meet!" (with Jüri Varus) won awards at the Baltic Festival and the Soviet Union Festival. "The History of Estonian Book Design" (with Hari Tibar) was awarded the Estonian Festival Grand Prix. "The Difficult Hobby" (with Hans Vaisma) was a documentary which talked about the history of the Estonian amateur film movement.
Jaak Järvine was one of the organisers of the Baltic Festivals in Tallinn in 1978, 1982, 1987, 1990, 1993 and 1997. Between 1988, when the Soviet Union Federation of Amateur Film Makers was founded, and 1991 Jaak Järvine was the member of the board of that federation. Jaak Järvine was a member of the jury in the UNICA '96 festival in Almelo (NLD).
