The Videomaker's Journey: part seventeen
Editing Principles for Beginners

Use the links in the text to move between sections.

Step 3: Jump cuts, Crossing the line and screen Direction

Step 4: Shifting the shots around and Fine-Tuning

Add cutaways - add reaction shots - use leading-with-the-audio at cuts - use leading-with-the-picture at cuts.

I now find that this type of edit is very easy to do with the iMovie software. I describe how I edit - leading with the dialogue on the iMac computer, it is similar to some of the other editing systems. The instructions relate to Fig. 1 Leading with the dialogue, the video shot and audio clip names are imaginary.

  • Select the half line of dialogue at the beginning of Shot B and note where S1 will be.
  • Split video Shot B at S1 - thus creating Shot B1 and Shot B2.
  • Extract the dialogue from video Shot B1. The dialogue Bd, automatically drops down to the audio track below - locking pins appear.
  • Slide the dialogue Bd to the left so that it will be, below the end of Shot A -the locking pins travel with the dialogue.
  • If the audio above Bd has to be muted or adjusted - split Shot A at S2 -thus creating Shot A1and Shot A2.
  • Delete Shot B1. The locking pins prevent dialogue Bd from jumping somewhere else.
  • Adjust the audio volumes.

[With Adobe Premiere Pro the process is like this:

  • Drop both clips on the timeline:

  • Right-click on Shot A and from the menu choose Unlink Audio and Video.

  • Right-click on Shot B and from the menu choose Unlink Audio and Video.

  • Drag the left of Shot B's Video (which trims it) until it snaps into place at the end of Shot A's Video.

  • Drag the right of Shot A's Sound (which trims it) until it snaps into place at the start of Shot B's Sound.
