THE BRITISH AMATEUR VIDEO AWARDS (BAVA) 1993
The complete 12 winners of the competition organised by Camcorder User, What Camcorder and What Video, sponsored by Scotch Cassettes, as premiered at BAFTA on September 18, 1993. A short advertisement for Scotch Cassettes precedes the programme.
1. | EINTRITT VERBOTEN (FORBIDDEN ENTRY) Al Vardy A group on an adventure course in Hurtgen Forest, West Germany, find themselves at the site of a massacre which took place in May 1945 as hostilities were due to stop. An action-packed drama with explosive special effects, included here in its original, full-length, Widescreen version. Sections of German dialogue are subtitled. 2. | NO WATER NO PAY Graham Gardener and Geraldine Warren (Essex) Don Wilkins, a Cornish water-diviner, and his wife Margaret, set to work to discover water on Roscollas Farm, Treverva. To date, dowser Don has drilled 1300 holes and, as the title reveals, he has a golden rule on behalf of his customers. . . A longer version by the maker is on the Westcliff Showreel 1993. 3. | THERE'S A PLACE Leandro Blanco (Spain) A beautifully photographed and stylish montage; a passionate and evocative plea to stop trapping animals behind bars in zoos. The music was written and per-formed by the maker himself. 'There's a place where time has stood still, where dreams never come true, . . .where freedom was lost long ago'. 4. | ENCOUNTER Andrew Castell A young couple (Nina Young and Andrew Castell) play psychological games which threaten to explode into violence. Is she the seductive creature she appears to be, or a murderess stalking the streets? Is he an innocent victim, or a willing partner? Nina Young was awarded the accolade of Best Dramatic Performance for her role in this adult drama which has a twist of black comedy. Directed by John Segal. 7. | CONCERNING SWIFT Mike Minder (Reading) This stylish mystery opens with a young man, Swift (James Silver), alone in a featureless white room. As he explores the corridor outside, and the other rooms leading from it, the objects he finds trigger memories from his past. He remembers meeting and courting his girlfriend, Rachel (Kate Alderton), but seems unable to come to terms with why he finds himself in the white room. Also starring Seb Gaete. 12. | THE DAY OF THE INVADERS Philip Beasley (Essex) A send-up of the 1950s science-fiction B films, with bravura performances from Andrew Fleming, Hazel Ayres, Steve Kutz and the producer himself. When invaders from outer space land on Earth, only the former Head of Military Intelligence can possibly defeat the enemy - but he is rather busy cataloguing his collection of rare matchboxes. However, when his wife is attacked, Charles calls upon the Professor, a scientific genius, to help him see off the alien menace ...
