A selection of assorted award-winners in the 2000 IAC International Film and Video Competition, premiered at Movie 2000, held March 24-26, 2000, in Buxton, Derbyshire.

1. HINTER DER FASSADE (BEHIND THE FACADE)
Peter and Véronique Hoch (Germany)
In front of a brick wall, against which leans a ladder, an old man (Heinz Golly) with a begging-tin waits. Various adults come along, climb the ladder and look over the wall. Finally, a young boy (Lukas Berchner) arrives and, in his turn, looks over ... Director Peter Hoch. (English subtitles.)

2. TUSCANY - THE TRIUMPH OF THE RENAISSANCE
Willy Van der Linden (Belgium)
A documentary about one of the most attractive regions in Italy. Beautifully shot, well edited, with discreet music and a clearly-spoken commentary (in English!) by Colin Howett, each element making a positive contribution to the whole.

3. SHOTDOWN
Anja Langenbacher (Germany)
An intriguing style of animation, using the 'Western' genre and the classic confrontation between two men and one woman. It also plays with the idea of film and the projecting of it.

4. PETER'S MONUMENT
Michael Gough, FACI (Sunderland)
Following Moscow Memories in 1999 (see lib. nos: V 190/191 item 5), Michael Gough now takes us on an equally fascinating historical tour of St Petersburg. This is, again, very well photographed and edited, with an excellent commentary and appropriate music to complement everything.

A surreal, yellow/red comedy about 'El Cordobés' (Daniel Gerharz), an 11-year-old bullfighter. His father (Matthias Spehr), a sailor now returned from the sea but out of work, helps him train by means of a shopping-trolley on the flat roof of their high-rise apartment block. Then Marie (Regina Lebharz), a lottery fanatic neighbour, comes into their lives ...
