1. | MUMMY's BOYS Southport Moviemakers (Merseyside) Two young brothers (who are not very efficient) rob a local shop to get some money. They drive back home, bickering as they do so. Mother is a bit of a dragon so they decide to go out again to the local pub - still planning further'scams' ... But mother has the last word! 2. | SPLENDID PEOPLE David Whitworth (Huddersfield) During World War II women had to start boating on rivers and canals since the men were away, and this shows a group of them in Hawksferry, Derbyshire. Luckily, a local photographer at the time, Robert Longdon, took many monochrome stills which have been used in the film and gives a great feeling of the period. The commentary by Geoff Parkin is exemplary . IAC Five Stars 2008 |

5. | OLDIEGARAGE Karin & Bernhard Hausberger (Austria) Manni Perez-Moreno was born with what many would find an insuperable handicap, but not him! He eventually started a business of restoring vintage cars, especially Porsche. This film is his story. IAC Daily Mail Challenge Trophy, Best Documentary 2008. Guernsey Lily, 2008. * It is worth mentioning here that this is the second time in consecutive years that Bernhard Hausberger has won the Daily Mail Trophy. The last time anyone won it in two consecutive years was T. Lawrenson in 1935 and 1936 - seventy-one years ago! |
