AT THE CROSS-ROADS

Tonu Aru (USSR)

1. Tonu is an IAC member living in Tallinn in Estonia. Made in 1981, and photographed in black-and-white by Ylo Keedus, this is a story about a crisis in marriage, examined first through the eyes of the wife, then by the husband and finally by their daughter. Each in turn gets out of their car first at the symbolic cross-roads. There is no dialogue, but a translation, by Tina Tamman of the BBC Monitoring Unit, Caversham, is available for the voice-over at the very end of the film - a poetic summary of the harm a rift in love can cause to a child of the family.
Transfer from 16mm film.
