One of the leading figures in Polish amateur film movement, Piotr Majdrowicz has been making films with the Amateur Film Club AWA since 1974. His films have received awards at numerous film festivals in Poland and abroad. In 1994 he made a full-length feature FROM A DISTANCE. At present he deals mainly with film education and organizes film courses, workshops, presentations and movie competitions. Majdrowicz (1957) is the director of Film Education Department in the Culture Center "Zamek" and a vice president of the Federation for Nonprofessional Filmmakers in Poland. He has been organizing famous International Film Workshops "One Take" in Leba where participants from all over Europe come to take part in activities prepared by well-known Polish film directors. Piotr Majdrowicz is also the director of the International Film Festival "Off Cinema" in Poznan, the most important event in nonprofessional film movement in Poland. He has been twice received the Diploma of Honor granted by the Minister of Culture in Poland. |
In front of me lies the last letter Gisela wrote to the Friends of UNICA, an optimistic letter, looking forward to the next meeting. Just a few days later we gathered in Niedergailbach to say goodbye to Gisela.
Time slips by so quickly, and in its fleeting passage took a person dear to so many hearts.
Gisela took over leading the Friends of UNICA from Serge Michcl. She organized meetings enormous energy and enthusiasm. She was always friendly, ready to help, but also critical in arguments during UNICA Committee sittings. She truly enriched UNICA Committee activities .
Gisela is not with us any more. After a long and hard illness she passed away. On March 9th 2001 we said farewell in her home town of Niedergailbach in Germany.
Gisela, thank you very much for all you have done for the Friends of UNICA. You will always be in our hearts.
For the UNICA Committee
Max Hänsli, president
Report of the Committee Meeting held 22nd - 25th March 2001 in Luxembourg
Ladies and Gentlemen, dear film friends.
At the invitation of the Luxembourg Federation, the UNICA Committee met in Luxembourg-Ville. The following information is just a short report on the discussions. On this occasion - perfectly organised by Georges FONDEUR, the president of the Luxembourg Federation - we had the opportunity of visiting the venue where the UNICA 2002 Congress will be held and I can assure you that the premises are up to our expectations. We will provide further information in due course.
The Committee examined the various items of the long agenda.
With deep regret we took leave of Gisela who took such a good care of the "Friends of UNICA". An impressive number of Committee members and members of the Friends of UNICA Club had come to attend the funeral. We will pay homage to Gisela's memory in the next issue of the News of UNICA. Her husband Wolfgang will be in charge of the club until the Tallinn Congress and then we will examine the matter of succession. Wolfgang is very familiar to all Friends of UNICA so that the management of this operation will not be interrupted.
The Treasurer gave a positive report: all membership fees for 2000 have been duly paid. New Zealand has left UNICA as of 31.12.2000. We regret that. Malta, which has failed to pay the fees in the past few years, has been crossed out of the list of members, in compliance with the Statutes.
Concerning UNICA 2001 in Tallinn, it was confirmed that the Organising Committee is very active. They kindly requested all national federations to promote the event and the Committee takes this opportunity to support that request. Tallinn is well prepared and equipped for the Congress and I hope that many UNICA friends who are still hesitant will now confirm their participation. We also hope that many national federations will encourage one or more young film makers to take advantage of the chance to gain first-hand experience of a UNICA Congress.
It appears that we have increasing difficulties screening conventional film formats (16 mm and S-8) - and this observation applies to Tallinn. Even if it still possible to provide particular equipment in specific cases, we generally have no spare equipment. This is the reason why this issue will also be on the agenda of the General Meeting in Tallinn.
Leaflets with short information about the films selected for the UNICA Competition are very useful for both viewers and jury. We ask national federations to provide them and to arrange that their film programme is supported by such information (as far as possible in English, French and German).
The "What is UNICA" folder now exists in French, English, German, Italian and Spanish versions. This leaflet will be appropriate when it comes to answering the question "UNICA ? - what is it ?". We may order copies - in reasonable numbers - from the Secretary General.
We will try this year - in Tallinn - to have the audience take part in the discussion. However, for obvious reasons, this will be subject to time constraints. We are looking forward to seeing how this experiment can be implemented, as it might be the way to the future.
We intend to publish the catalogue of our Library in UNICA-News. This will probably take several issues. The objective is to answer the frequently asked question : "How many films/ videos are currently stored in the Library?".
The Autumn Meeting of the UNICA Committee will be held in South Africa as part of the preparations for the UNICA 2003 Congress to be held in that country. We will share with you the information collected during this meeting.
Finally, I request all national federations to circulate UNICA information (such as this) - either in full or as a summary - to all their members. I would like to thank them in advance for all such arrangements.
I look forward to greeting many of you on at the UNICA Congress in Tallinn.
